Oh beloved Ibiza with its beautiful nature and multicultural ambiance – there is no wonder this island has become an art paradise. To mention a few, Ibiza has a long history as a paradise for free-spirited individuals, artists, and creatives. In the 1960s and 1970s, Ibiza became a hub for the counterculture movement. The island’s bohemian atmosphere has attracted artists seeking inspiration and a sense of freedom. And the stunning natural landscapes, beautiful beaches, and vibrant sunsets of Ibiza provide a picturesque backdrop which promise to inspire creativity. It’s not a coincidence many artists are drawn to the island’s unique mix of nature and culture. Ibiza’s rich cultural heritage with its influences from various civilizations, including Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, and Catalans has contributed to a unique cultural mix that artists find fascinating. In the name of art, we have put together a list of art galleries you should not miss out on in Ibiza! Let’s explore it together!
La Nave Salinas
Constructed in 1941, this formidable stone building near the Las Salinas salt village was initially conceived as a postwar employment initiative. Originally intended as a warehouse for storing salt from the nearby salt flats, its doors remained shuttered until 2015. That year, NYC-based art collector Lio Malca purchased the vacant building and decided to turn it into a vibrant space dedicated to art exhibitions. Previous showcases featured works by Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf.
Espacio Micus
Near Jesús, Espacio Micus stands as perhaps Ibiza’s most atmospheric art enclave. The origins of this space trace back to 19732 when artist Eduard Micus sought refuge from the political turmoil in his native Germany and found solace on the tranquil shores of Ibiza. Initially conceived as a studio and workshop, the expansive multi-level building organically expanded over time to house an ever-expanding collection of works. Today, Micus’ daughter, Katja, curates the gallery, mixing her father’s creations with exhibitions featuring international contemporary artists throughout the season.
Ibiza Art Fair
Last year the Ibiza Art Fair – a vibrant celebration of creativity, took place at the iconic Pikes hotel. With over 70 national and international exhibitors, the event spotlighted over 300 original contemporary artworks. The atmosphere was set with art talks, live paintings, children’s activities, and a delightful shopping experience, creating a friendly and relaxed ambiance. Typically held in September, stay tuned for updates on the event’s location and timing through their official website.
MACE
Within the walls of Dalt Vila, you’ll find Ibiza’s most prominent art space in the site of a former munition’s storehouse. However, its foundations trace back even further, revealing remnants of 6th-century Phoenician houses beneath the museum’s glass floor. MACE is a modern art paradise and serves as the definitive starting point for those intrigued by Ibiza’s mid-20th-century role in the art world. The permanent collection showcases work by luminaries of the Balearic art scene, including Erwin Broner, Raoul Hausman, Isabel Echarri, Antoni Tur Costa, Antoni Marí Ribas ‘Portmany, and the recently departed Erwin Bechtold.
Far de Ses Coves Blanques
Built in 1897 and operational until 1963, this authentic lighthouse has transformed into one of Ibiza’s most stunning exhibition spaces. The iconic building now houses a socio-cultural hub and ocean interpretation centre, complete with a rotating art gallery. In 2014, the lighthouse’s original lamp, discovered and dismantled in a local henhouse, was meticulously restored and reinstated.
